10 More Things New Weightlifters Should Know, Mike Gray
10 More Things New Weightlifters Should Know
Mike Gray  |  August 22 2012  |  Weightlifting
1. More isn’t always better, it’s just more. 2. After a PR, you get 24 hours to enjoy it. Then get your ass back to work. If you are anything like me, sleeping that night will be hard. 3. If you feel great full lifts, if you feel a bit off then do power versions, if you feel really bad do some pulls. What I am saying here is if you feel busted up and can’t quite perform a full lifts then do power movements, if you feel really busted up then do pulls. 4. You should tr......
Something We Learned At The Olympics, Matt Foreman
Something We Learned At The Olympics
Matt Foreman  |  August 13 2012  |  Weightlifting
Hopefully, you all got to watch a lot of weightlifting action at the Olympics over the last couple of weeks. NBCOlympics.com is like a gift from the heavens, showing complete replay coverage of every weight class. This is the first Olympics in my life when I’ve been able to see the entire competition. When I sit down at the computer to watch one of these replays, I practically go into a trance. The whole world just tunes out for a while. One of my cats could be on fire and I wouldn’t......

10 Things All New Weightlifters Should Know
Mike Gray  |  August 6 2012  |  Weightlifting
1. Learn the correct terms. Snatch, Clean and Jerk. Then learn Power Snatch, Power Clean and Power Jerk. Then keep going until you can name every lift on Greg’s video showcase with out notes. 2. Learn kilos. I am at the point where I convert pounds to kilos in my head. It will make training at real gyms easier and meets as well. 3. Find a coach or a group of like-minded lifters. It will make a huge difference in your training. When I started lifting, my kid was pretty young; six year......
People Who Lift Weights...and Weightlifters, Matt Foreman
People Who Lift Weights...and Weightlifters
Matt Foreman  |  July 30 2012  |  Weightlifting
A few years ago, I wrote a Performance Menu article about the difference between two types of people: those who lift weights, and those who are weightlifters. You might not have read it because it’s pretty old and I didn’t include it in Bones of Iron. I wasn’t happy with the way it turned out, aside from the main idea which I thought was pretty good. So I’ll hit that idea again here. Maybe the whole thing will taste better if I just keep dumping more frosting on it. S......
Weightlifting Competition Etiquette, Bob Takano
Weightlifting Competition Etiquette
Bob Takano  |  July 27 2012  |  Weightlifting
Back in the 1980’s one of my most diligent athletes was Mike Regnier, who was not only lifting but working on a neuroscience Ph.D at the same time. In spite of the heavy time demands, Mike rarely missed training sessions. One day he brought his then girlfriend Julie to hang out in the weight room while he trained. Julie, who would later marry Mike, had been a fairly serious tennis player and so was familiar with the athletic environment. After the training session I struck up a conve......
Dos And Don'ts Of Meet Day, Mike Gray
Dos And Don'ts Of Meet Day
Mike Gray  |  July 24 2012  |  Weightlifting
These are the do’s and don’ts of what to do and not do on meet day that I have either watched or experienced myself over the years.   1.       Do make weight. Be prepared for this and buy a good scale or get there early enough to check the one they are using. Be polite and don’t cut in front of people who are actually weighing in. Just ask whoever is manning the room for a “courtesy weigh”.   2.    &nbs......
Lifting For Revenge, Matt Foreman
Lifting For Revenge
Matt Foreman  |  July 17 2012  |  Weightlifting
Alternative teeny rock isn’t my number-one choice of music, but there are a few songs in the genre that I dig. One of them is “Misery Business” by the band Paramore. The lyrics were written by their lead singer, a little peach named Hayley Williams. The song is pretty simple, actually. A girl is gloating because she stole a boy away from another girl she hates like hell. She jacked this girl’s man, and she just loves the fact that the chick is suffering. I don’t hav......
The Trouble With Pulls, Greg Everett
The Trouble With Pulls
Greg Everett  |  July 9 2012  |  Weightlifting
Traditionally, snatch and clean pulls are prescribed as a percentage of a lifter’s maximum snatch or clean. This generally keeps pulls appropriately quick and technically sound rather than allowing them to get slow and change the lifter’s balance and timing. Typically pulls are done with 80-105% of the lifter’s best snatch or clean, and for a lifter who is well-developed technically, this is usually appropriate and effective. However, for newer lifters who nearly always have......

Sample One-week Training Program
Matt Foreman  |  July 8 2012  |  Weightlifting
A lot of you guys are Performance Menu subscribers, right? For those of you who are, you might have noticed that we’ve been running a special section in the magazine for the past few issues. About eight months ago, I was cleaning out some old boxes in my garage and I found my training journal from 1993. This was when I was twenty-one and training with the Calpian weightlifting club in Washington. For over a year, I literally wrote down every lift, set, and rep I did in training. Absolu......
Jerks: From The Rack Or Blocks, Greg Everett
Jerks: From The Rack Or Blocks
Greg Everett  |  June 27 2012  |  Weightlifting
Having our new jerk tables delivered this morning made me think of a common question—when and why do you use jerk blocks or tables and when do you just take the jerk from a rack and bring it back down yourself? This of course is an opinion sort of question, so don’t take the following as some kind of weightlifting fact. Plenty of great jerkers have never once done a jerk workout with blocks. They are not a requirement to having a jerk of any certain caliber. That being said, they&......
