Where Our Work Ethic Comes From, Matt Foreman
Where Our Work Ethic Comes From
Matt Foreman  |  June 4 2012  |  Weightlifting
We all probably realize that work ethic is one of the most essential qualities a weightlifter can have. When you’re really pushing the limits of your ability in this sport, the physical challenges are beyond almost any other type of activity you’ll ever attempt. If you’re not a hard worker, you don’t have a prayer. I think we learn our work ethic as we grow up. Some of us learn to be hard workers because we come from parents who did it all their lives and, when we bec......

Tighten Up The Bar, Lifter Will Repeat.
Mike Gray  |  May 31 2012  |  Weightlifting
Just about 6 years ago I entered my first weightlifting meet. I had been Olympic lifting for about 4 months and wanted to get into a meet before I took off for Iraq for the next 7 months. So there was a group traveling from San Diego up to San Francisco for the California State Games at a local High School.  It was a great time and I learned plenty about competing in a meet and what the difference between “gym” lifting and “meet” lifting is.    Th......

Training With Pain, It's Such A Happy Thing
Matt Foreman  |  May 7 2012  |  Weightlifting
A neat little motivational motto has been gaining popularity in recent years. It’s the one that says, “Pain is weakness leaving the body.” You’ve seen it, right? It’s all over t-shirts, gym posters, etc. “Pain is weakness leaving the body.” Let’s analyze this. None of us want weakness in our bodies, right? That’s affirmative, captain. So, when weakness leaves our bodies, it’s a good thing. Apparently, it’s a moment of purif......

Where Have All The Prs Gone?
Aimee Anaya Everett  |  April 24 2012  |  Weightlifting
“Our business in life is not to get ahead of others, but to get ahead of ourselves—to break our own records, to outstrip our yesterday by our today.” - Unknown Do you know what weightlifting is? It is the worst bitch you could ever encounter. It frustrates you, makes you cry on the inside, doesn’t take yes for an answer, and fucks all your shit up. Mentally and physically. Weightlifting continually tells you no. It pulls when you want to push and it pushes when you wa......
Lowering The Bar Safely In The Snatch, Clean And Jerk, Greg Everett
Lowering The Bar Safely In The Snatch, Clean And Jerk
Greg Everett  |  April 16 2012  |  Weightlifting
Generally snatches, cleans and jerks are dropped to the floor after the completion of successful reps. But when an athlete is doing multiple reps of the snatch or clean from the hang, or multiple consecutive reps in the jerk, push press or other overhead lifts, the athlete will need to lower the bar under control to the appropriate position. This can be intimidating and made unnecessarily difficult and unsafe if the athlete doesn’t know how to lower the bar properly. When lowering the b......

Back To The Bottom: Squat Stance In The Snatch And Clean
Matt Foreman  |  March 20 2012  |  Weightlifting
I went to a weightlifting meet last weekend where almost sixty lifters were competing. It was a huge contest and a very long day, but it was a great one too. As with all local meets, there was a wide range of athletes in attendance. I recognized a few experienced names from recent national championship competitions, and of course there was also a large crowd of newcomers who were still in the early stages of their weightlifting training. As I watched lift after lift, I got......
Olympic Weightlifting: The Concise Guide, Greg Everett
Olympic Weightlifting: The Concise Guide
Greg Everett  |  March 16 2012  |  Weightlifting
I've finally gotten around to posting this little getting started-type guide to weightlifting that has seemed conspicuously absent from this website. It's just a quick and simple collection of information about how to get started with weightlifting - should be a good resource for athletes new to the sport or training. You can read the guide here. Please post any suggestions you might have to improve it here.......

Greg Everett On Mike Robertson's Podcast
Greg Everett  |  March 14 2012  |  Weightlifting
I had a great time yesterday doing Mike Robertson's In The Trenches podcast. He asked some good questions, such as Where do you place your hands on the snatch? Elbows “locked” or “long” on the pull? What is ideal neck position in the squat and/or pull? How do you improve wrist flexibility to front squat and/or catch cleans? A discussion on how to catch the bar on multi-rep sets of jerks or push presses; A cue I use to get the abs working correctly in the squat, and one bi......
Hot Streaks In Weightlifting, Volume Two, Matt Foreman
Hot Streaks In Weightlifting, Volume Two
Matt Foreman  |  March 9 2012  |  Weightlifting
Have you ever sat down and written out your lifting goals on paper? I think it’s part of being on a hot streak. When your lifts are going through the roof, you start to think about how much progress you’re going to make in the future months based on what you’ve done recently. So you plan out a month-to-month max out schedule, or maybe you plan out a whole year of meets if you’re a competitive lifter. You write a timetable where you’re going ......

Hot Streaks In Weightlifting, Volume One
Matt Foreman  |  February 28 2012  |  Weightlifting
Let’s talk about “hot streaks.”   Plainly stated, a hot streak is a time period where you’re making major progress. Training is basically perfect, competitions are huge successes, and personal records are falling like Irishmen on payday. It’s a phase you hit where you’re just kicking serious ass, plain and simple. You’re en fuego!   Both athletes and coaches have hot streaks from time to time. As an athlete, it’s p......
