Fat and the Gag Reflex
 
Has anyone else noticed an unusual urge to gag when eating highly concentrated fats? Perhaps some of it is just a mental issue, but I've found that when trying to eat certain fatty pieces of meat (eg. pork shoulder), they simply do not want to go down when a large amount of visible fat is on there. The taste and texture of that fat is weird, I'll admit, but I don't know why that should cause me to gag. If I paid for the calories, I sure as hell want to eat them!

More recently, I've come into a problem with my 500 calorie olive oil shots. For the past four days, the temperature outside has rocketed up. We haven't started using the air conditioner indoors yet either, so it's pretty warm inside too. It turns out that a 2oz shot of (warm) room temperature olive oil is many times more repulsive than a moderate temperature one. Why is that? I can easily take 12-14oz of olive oil per day (obviously, not in one sitting, or it'd all leave in one ****ting), but with this warmer stuff, anything after 4oz literally makes me want to vomit right after it goes down. Simply the thought of it makes my stomach uneasy (not joking!). It takes a fight for it to go down too. I find myself unable to simply swallow it after throwing it back like I could with the cooler stuff. It has to sit in my mouth for a second for me to get used to the warmth, and that second is unbearable.


What is it about fat that triggers the gag reflex? Am I an oddball in this regard, or have you guys noticed it too?

(Also, can you refrigerate olive oil?)

Yes you can refrigerate olive oil, why you would I don't know.

I don't have this gag reflex from fat. Olive oil on the other hand by itself can be pretty darn taste overload. Its more taste than texture. I prefer it with something else than alone.

I think its all in your head. I took a bite out of a stick of butter the other day, that was kind of fun.

I'd say it's obviously your body telling you something.

Just because you're trying to jam down massive fat calories to gain weight doesn't mean your body likes it.

I hear about this often with female patients who have gallbladder issues--their bodies intuitively know that they will not digest the fat well (most likely due to a lack of proper amounts of bile)--so their bodies try to reject large amounts of fat high up the gastrointestinal chain.

Refrigeration would get rid of that uncomfortable warmth in it. For the most part, I use 100% olive oil for my weight gaining, mostly because of the cost, but partly because it's much less "sharp" tasting that extra virgin. I know extra virgin has more antioxidants and stuff, but when 100% pure is 1,800 calories per dollar and extra virgin is only 1,400...

Visualizing you eating a stick of butter has made my day.

I digest the fat well. I went through that whole steatorrhea issue many months ago. I can eat plenty of other calories of other foods just fine without any sort of gagging too, including fats like avocados, nuts, etc. It just seems to be the slimier, more concentrated fats that my body doesn't like. That's understandable, sure, but I still want the calories, even if my body doesn't.

When it gets hot, like it has been here the past 5 days, my desire to eat goes down, and fresh fruit suddenly becomes my new favorite food. Its certainly seasonal. I guess winter is for gaining weight, and summer for running around outside.

However, I also gagged on olive oil during my last cycle of gaining weight, and I took it as a sign that I should end the cycle and move onto something else.

Absolutely. Winter = fat + heavy lifting; Summer = carbs + metcon. Check out the longevity thread. Unfortunately it doesn't always match goals...

Interesting. I've tried eating really fatty pieces of meat and it's never gone down. Just the other night we went to some Phillipino restaurant and my friends ordered something that was the pork belly breaded and fried. No can do. I could only eat bacon if the fatty part was cooked enough that it became hard ( which is why I microwave my bacon so it's slightly overcooked and all stiff ).

I can eat something like carnitas but not pieces of fat directly without gagging. Just about the fattiest thing I can eat is probably whole milk ( which I can consume a lot of ) or maybe ice cream. Still not a chunk of fat.

I also seem to notice that ingesting something fatty generally seems to make me want to go have a bowel movement within a short amount of time (15-75m). Weird and possibly TMI but peculiar.

There probably is a big difference between eating fats with meats and slower digestion....than just taking a shot of olive oil....probably stresses the gallbladder in different ways. I'd just go with "if your body is saying No....you may want to listen to it".

Difficulty eating pork shoulder, brisket, or ribs is something that has to be fixed immediately.

Well my body didn't particularly "like" going anywhere past 175lbs. It's been work. However, I know that I'll be a better, stronger, and no less healthy lifter at 105kg, so I'm not giving in now.

That is very fast. You might want to get that checked out.

Normally, I have 1-3 short, narrowly spaced movements shortly after beginning my IF eating window. I just take it as my GI tract making room for the next batch of stuff.

While I suppose that recommendation could make some sense, I'd like to hit my goal weight before January 2010, when the UMD gymnastics club I'm part of begins its performing season.

I know! I just don't know how. Do you ever have problems with the particularly fatty pieces? I think that whole "eat lean meats" thing messed with my head.
