I'm a novice at the HG and the diverse skills for the various events are a challenge. Kettlebell swings and snatches can provide good conditioning that transfers pretty well to the weight for height, sheave toss, and caber toss. Farmers Walks, Waiters Walks, and Walking Lunges should also work well. An annual periodization plan as Dan John advocates seems to be a good approach, with a heavy lifting phase, a heavy throwing phase, and a competition phase. A month of pure CrossFit between the competition and heavy lifting phases might not hurt.
