Getting the full extension and layback at the top puts a good deal of stress on them. Sounds weird, but I purposely warm-up and stretch my abs before doing stones. I've had similar pains to what you've described.
Just work with lighter "stones" as Dave said. I'm sure it will work out.

I think you're right. i think it's a strong in the middle of body thing. That's why I think front squats and zerchers are the best thing you can do for....what for it........
