Because if you can't make it in 3 attempts, the chances are slim that you're going to make it. If it's a genuine max attempt, you'll be pretty burned after one, let alone 3. And if it's not your only max attempt in a training session, you're just blowing your wad and pretty much guaranteeing failure to make records on subsequent lifts. And by going on marathon record attempt sessions, you're asking for an injury.
