Default Just Starting Starting Strength

I just tried my first day of starting strength today. I think I nearly tore my glutes or something when I was trying to find the right weight to use. I work out alone so I used a stand/machine for the squats. I feel like my form is not how it should be. Any tips from those of you who have tried SS or just know how to lift weights?
