If you're using a machine, stop it. Learn how to squat first. Post a video here, post videos on Rip's site, read the book a second time.
Like Arien said, if your flexibility sucks and you're new to strength training, keep the weights real low. May need to just go with the weight of the bar for a bit to figure things out. Better to start nice and easy than to screw something up.
