Seriously - I've been going barefoot since March 7th, and it really isn't all that bad. Your feet get phenomenonally tougher within the first week. Haven't done any running yet, but I've traveled probably 20 miles with all the walking built into college. Much of it has been on sidewalks (many of which are pebbled, not smooth) or cutting across parking lots (which are full of small rocks and very small glass shards). It's really not that bad.
