This is true but not always so depending on the quality of the food. Not everyone has access to organic or low processed food so that is an argumentative point. Fish oil is a supplement yet we are all encouraged to take it, a good multivitamin has always been encouraged. Creatine/BCAA's are known to improve recovery, several members here use it. Probiotics are important for gut health, etc.
Not exactly wasted in my opinion and there are several that would agree with me.
