There was some documentary/study where they had people eat nothing but fast food to lose weight. Blood profiles improved, weight fell off so long as they ate less than they needed.
The point of any kind of nutritional strategy is adherence. Paleo, and Low Carb/Paleo diets tend to be easier to maintain and easier to lose weight on due to the simple fact that you're likely to eat less without noticing it.

Eat too much, get fat. Get fat, get unhealthy in a lot of ways. Eat less, stay un-fat. Get healthier in a lot of ways.
