If tape helps the pain and allows you do be active, that's fine.
ASTYM is a good if it can be applied correctly, but can it like Donald outlines?
I prefer to go along the lines of acute or chronic based standard treatment to see if that helps, especially if there is losses of range of motion or strength and improper mechanics and see if that works first.
