I'm in the process of coming back from a knee surgery last summer (ACL reconstruction). If you took eight months off, I would say you're healed by now. That's a long layoff. The biggest thing I would suggest is doing a lot of work with extremely light weights just to make sure you're able to get into the right positions. Make sure you can sit into a good bottom position with an empty bar before you do anything. Once you can do that, write out a week-to-week progression of weight increases that you'll follow, and don't be afraid to make it slow and cautious. Whatever your surgery was, I would say you're ready to start lifting again if you've waited eight months. Make sure icing, post-workout stretching, and prehab exercises like the ones you did in physical therapy become a regular part of your training also.
