Default How can you do multiple pull ups and still be over weight?

I've seen a few physically fit folks that have puppy fat or back fat or belly fat and they are able to do pull ups, etc.

What gives?

dunno...i'm a fatty at 220 and am good for at least 15. maybe it's a side effect of training.

Ditto , I will say though that improving my back strength via reverse hypers, back extensions and clean deads doubled my numbers

I'm pretty chubby at 255 and I can do about 20 consecutive "nose ups" with no kip. If you ask for a "chin up" - you'll need to distinguish "which chin."


I can only do about 5 chest to the bar dead hangs. I could probably get the tip of my goatee over the bar for a good set of 10 to 15 dead hangs if I was fresh.

It's all relative and a function of years of training. And I'm proud of my ab/android. I've got a lot invested in him. Plus it matters less the more you approach middle age and the closer your children get to becoming legitimate teenagers.

I'm a 5'6'', 175lbs female who can do deadhangs. Got there through Olympic lifting and adding on barbell rows, body rows, and negatives.

Being lighter makes pull-ups easier, but being heavy doesn't mean it's impossible--you just gotta be strong enough to compensate.

I should also add that I know where you're coming from--I've been losing weight on-and-off for a while and was sure I would never be able to do pull-ups until I lost a lot of weight, and wasn't even sure then as a healthy weight for me given my body fat percentage is probably 150-155. When I got them it was a pleasant surprise!
