Taurine + ZMA
Taurine is, if anything, even cheaper than ZMA. At Beyond-A-Century it's 300 grams for $5.75, and it's completely tasteless.
I find that if I use 6-9 grams of L-taurine with the ZMA that I don't have that window of opportunity with regards to getting to sleep.
If you have this problem, and I know a few of you do, try taking 9 grams of taurine before bed. If that works, titrate it down to the least effective dose. IIRC, 1 teaspoon = ~3 grams of L-taurine.
For some reason the L-taurine itself helps me with sleep. At one point in time I knew why, but I don't anymore, and I'm too lazy to look it up at this time.
Cheap fix for a common problem.

"Taurine also functions as a neuroregulator and nerve cell growth factor. It promotes a calming effect by inhibiting the release of norepinephrine and acetylcholine, and stimulating the release of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Taurine increases the production of serotonin and melatonin by stimulating the activity of N-acetyltransferase, resulting in normalization of sleep and nerve functioning."
or something like that....good tip

Is this the same taurine that's touted as the magical ingredient in Red Bull (and has it's origins from bull liver but is now synthesised in labs)?

Steve,
How has the taurine+ZMA going for you? I just switched to the biotest brand ZMA last week and the past 2 nights if I get woken up at all I'm awake for hours, tired but unable to fall asleep.
I was originally taking the GNC ZMA (2 months) which was Zinc arginate as opposed to the biotest brand which is aspartate. That's the only difference really between the 2 products, I think.

WEIRDEST THING EVER JUST HAPPENED!!!
I took some ZMA tabs about 5 minutes ago swallowed them down at least I thought I had with a big glass of water. I just caughed and I guess half of one of the tabs was caught in the back of my throat without me noticing??? I caughed, sneezed and a big puff of white powder blew out of my nose then the tab fell down the back of my throat.
Where the fk the tab was I don't know and how the fk it got there even less but geeeze that was weird!

Ha! It was in your sinuses.
A few times a year, I will get some food or something up in my sinuses and I have to blow it out my nose. Interesting party trick, though often painful.

I ended uo getting used to the Biotest ZMA, that first week though was very sleepless. My only guess was that my body was able to notice a difference between the types of Zinc being used? (A lame guess to be sure but everything else was pretty much the same, well the same as much as having 3 kids can be).
I hate to say it but I do like the Biotest ZMA much better than the GNC stuff, not to mention the fact that the Biotest stuff doesn't STINK like I have no idea what!
