Default Quinoa

Is quinoa classified as a paleo food? I know it's part of the spinach family and doesn't have most of the negative traits grains do, but i'm not sure if it would be classified as paleo or not.

Also, is there much nutritional difference between white, red and black quinoa?
I got some red quinoa the other day and it feels more fiberous, i don't know if it really is or not though.

Considering quinoa Paleo would be one of those cases of following the letter of the law, but not the spirit. Robb has mentioned before that it mimics grains in most aspects of its being, except that it has a full complement of amino acids. The GI is similar and I believe he said it can even cause a reaction in celiacs.

As for the white, red, and black differences....your guess is as good as mine.

Thanks Scott. Was wondering how quinoa could react in celiacs when it's gluten free? Is it something else in it's makeup?

Quinoa also contains saponins that act as anti-nutrients and need to be rinsed prior to consumption...so, I'd treat it like brown rice. If you want/need a dense carb source with relatively little nutritive value (as compared to fruit, veggies and lean meats)...go for it. It's yummy when prepared properly but I'd (personally) not make it a staple.
