Scott,
My theory on the combo is that the nightshade calcinosis issue (see my first article in the PMenu) is compounded by a relative magnesium to calcium deficiency.

Both cause excessive calcium deposition in soft tissues, so they are likely synergistic in their negative effects--and the opposite seems to be true as well (replacing magnesium plus eliminating nightshades can work wonders over time).

I read that oxalates found in leafy greens and some other plants can block the absorption of magnesium (and calcium and iron). Is this anything to be concerned with?

Also, chocolate is pretty high in magnesium and I've heard that chocolate cravings can be caused by magnesium deficiencies. I might try "supplementing" chocolate before bed once in a while instead of ZMA.

Craig,
The oxalates are a complicated issue, as they show up in so many "healthy" foods.

Chocolate contains caffeine-related compounds, so it may not help you sleep. YMMV. I have no problem with 1/4 of a 70%+ dark chocolate bar within hours of sleeping--but my wife would be wired awake from that same amount.

Picked up some Natural calm with zinc... plan on taking about 2 tsp/day which would be around 8mg of zinc...if I'm also using ZMA is this too much zinc?

Poliquin's maintenance dose of zinc is something like 30mg/day, after establishing a positive on the zinc taste test through higher dosing.

SO I have begun takeing a ZMA before bed and have noticed a significant difference in sleeping. I do wake up less in the night usually 1 short 1 hr. then either 2 3-4 hr. spurts or one 6 hr. followed by a roll around for 30+min then sleep hard for 1+hr.

The most significant difference is my dreams they are extreemly vivid and they happen every night. Also some of my deepest and most restfull sleep seems to be in that last hour after my one or two longer cycles and rolling around for 30+min.


This is only a week and a half in so we will see how it continues but I deffinately feel more rested.
