Well, the muscles do get tired being that they are put under pressure (blood forced out) and become hypoxic. Hypoxic muscles are tired muscles.
Also, it could have to do with shutting down reflex chains or overactive sympathetic system.... massage (all variations) are highly "relaxing" and stimulate parasymathetic dominance.
Either way the first one is good for stretching out aftewards, and the latter is good in general
