Default Reviving old-school lifts

I came across this site recently....not sure if any of you have seen it yet:

it got me thinking about the world of strength training before there were barbells...i was especially intrigued by the one-hand snatch, bent press, and the two-hands anyhow. i know that these lifts are illustrated using barbells on the page, but they are still one-handed lifts...so dumbells come to mind for (increased) safety and convenience.

i've started using some of these lifts to replace barbell lifts that i can't do for equipment/facility reasons. for example...one-armed pushpresses, one-armed snatches, all with dumbells. anyone do the same?

what i'm really curious about is how the strength developed using one-handed o-lifts differs from that developed using barbell o-lifts. i'd imagine that overhead shoulder and core stability would be the limiting factor here, not pulling strength off the ground, as the weights used are much lighter, but comparatively higher per arm.

thoughts?

Default I am familiar with almost all of these because....

I suggest checking out the the strength journal "MILO". Outside of the PM, it is the only strength publication that I read regularly. Check out the catalog of back issues at Ironmind.com.

A lot of the old school lifts really have no point to them, which is why they aren't performed anymore outside of the All Around Weightlifting type of circles.

The one armed OL variations do seem to enjoy a popularity with throwers.

I really like the DB variants of the Olifts and assistance exercises. they just feel fun and athletic. If you have not checked out the DB moves series from Rutman I highly recommend them.

Less technical to learn, safe, super grip intensive...good stuff!
