Default Fruits Protects People From Diabetic Effects of Dietary Sugars

The researchers isolated and tested a chemical, which they call simulin, and found that it accelerated the removal of excess sugar from the bloodstream, increased the sensitivity of insulin receptors, reduced the amount of carbohydrates absorbed, and reduced the amount of glucose manufactured by the liver. It also helped "[mobilize] carbohydrates from the fat cells."

Calling simulin a "sugar defense mechanism," the researchers said their findings suggested the chemical helps the body deal with sugar's potentially harmful effects. If added to foods and beverages, they said, it might help protect against diabetes and even allow diabetics to eat sugary foods again.

Simulin is not a sweetener, but rather a compound that could be added to already sweetened products.

The researchers have speculated that the chemical evolved as a way to encourage animals to eat more fruit by protecting them against diabetes.

"Fruit plants depend on their fruits being eaten to spread, so it makes sense that they would do everything they could to keep their fruit on the menu," said researcher Daryl Thompson. "This could be why humans didn't become diabetic despite eating so much sugar in fruit and vegetables."

Thompson said that further studies of simulin's effects are underway to clear the way for its use as a commercial food additive. He said that because the product is natural, it should not need to receive special FDA approval, and could probably achieve Generally Recognized As Safe status.

For the same reason, he expects companies and consumers to line up once the product is ready.

"We've had a good response from the food industry," he said, "and we think consumers will accept it because it is natural."

Yeah, I agree with your sentiment - there always seems to be a faction desiring to get diabetic/diseased people to continue their sugar/undesirable-eating ways, most obviously for monetary gain through population exploit. haha.

"Yeah, just pop this pill and you'll be fine" Instead they should be encouraging them to eat more fruit and that repugnant green stuff over there instead of isolating the compound responsible for the nice effects because, like everything, it's usually the sum of all parts instead of the constitute ones that are the true nascent benefactor. haha

One major problem...humans have been genetically selecting and hybridizing fruits to have more and more sugar content.

I doubt the simulin content has been raised proportionally.

Oh yeah, I've also had patients who have made themselves pre-diabetic solely from fruit, so it's not entirely protective. There are also the effects of fructose on the liver.

This is another attempt to overengineer "food". Maybe it will work as well as Olestra did.

That sums up some of the stuff Michael Pollan says in his book, In Defense of Food. Talking about the rise of nutritionism versus food. Interesting stuff.

Something that was really interesting to me was where he discussed that with all the nutritional science out there and the technology available today, we are still unable to replicate breast milk with all the multitude of formulas out there.

Well, what was their diet like before they became pre-diabetic from fruit? That probably had just as much to do with it as their supposed heavy fruit consumption did. I seriously doubt someone who isn't consuming any outside sugar will become "pre-diabetic" solely from fruit. You're saying fruit caused it but there can be SO MANY other causes that you're ignoring.

I do agree with you on the modification of produce though.

This gentleman was eating around and upwards of 20 pieces of fruit a day. He was strict Paleo for months during this time, and we watched his blood glucose numbers slowly creeping up.

I set his limit to 100g CHO/day and everything came back to acceptable ranges.

I think the blanket endorsement of "modern" fruit (modified produce, as you stated)as totally okay in the Paleo framework is the only problem I see my patients having with it. They say, "well, I don't like veggies, but fruit are totally OK, so I'll just eat as much fruit as I need to" and they skip all the veggies. Then they are frustrated as to why they don't lose any weight. Their hunger levels stay high and they are still eating more food than they need. I then have to go after their fruit intake.

I tell people, think of veggies as fruit, just without the sugar. Then they start to understand the value in prioritizing veggies over fruit, especially if they are trying to lose weight or control their blood sugar.

People lie all the time too....they say they eat just fruit like apples....yet forget to count the apple pie and ice cream.

This gentleman is pretty OCD...I believe him. Especially when he told me he reduced his fruit intake down to just 20 pieces a day...then down to 10.

As his fruit intake kept dropping, at each drop he would exhibit the commonly referred-to as "low blood sugar" symptoms that so many people have when going from a high-CHO diet to a low(er) one.

Basically, fruit is (much) better than processed carbs, but fruit doesn't get a free pass in my book.
