Whey Protein
I recently bought some no additive 100%, New Zealand brand, Whey Protein from Natural Grocers. I was taken aback a little when I read the ingredients and realized that it was made from sweet cheese!!! I may have just answered my own question, but, how "un-paleo"is whey protein?

If your goal is putting on muscle...you will need to not be 100% Paleo anyways...dont sweat it.

Why would your goal of putting on muscle make you not want to be 100% paleo?
It may be easier if you are not 100%, but what neolithic food would be precipitate muscle gains that a paleo food could not?

Jordan,
I'm not speaking for MOD here...my feelings on Paleo diets and body mass are mainly that eating Paleo creates a tendency for the body to move towards a more "natural" weight (for whatever that means). A "natural" weight is not necessarily the same as one in which someone is trying to gain mass to surpass this "natural" setpoint.
I find that if I eat Paleo and increase or decrease my general intake, my weight tends to stay right around 176-178#. To increase my intake significantly beyond this, I know I would have to go outside the boundaries of Paleo if I didn't want to always feel massively full of Paleo foods.
Quite simply, many non-Paleo foods have higher caloric densities in general than Paleo ones, which makes them "easier" to utilize for mass gain.

I hear you, and I wasn't trying to stir the pot.
But, I've been pure paleo for the better part of the last 2 years. And can make my weight fluctuate rather easily. Leaning out, as well as packing on a few extra pounds. Anywhere between 150-175 lbs are realistic if I put my mind to it.

No concern about any pot-stirring here...
Question is, for S&G, do you think you could do 190-195# on a Paleo plan?

Increase my overall mass an extra 20-25%, now that would be one hell of a challenge! My jaw and stomach hurt just thinking about it. It's almost as if answering that question would be a testament to what type of ego I have, I'll choose not to answer whether I think I could do it or not. I don't want to say I could, because I would never try to find out. But, I do think it could be done.
I guess my question pertaining to MOD's statement, if whey protein is the only non-paleo food that would help someone gain mass, then I think that a paleo substitute is available. Dehydrated eggs?

Eating 4000 cal of Paleo food is not easy....it's more about the calories (look at the gallon of milk crowd).....if you can, more power to you of course. Again....that was more for the "mass gain" comment....as most people who take Whey protein are usually doing it for that reason. I don't eat all paleo and enjoy pizza...beer...rice...etc. If I wanted to lean out I would go Paleo....if I wanted mass gain I would eat whatever I got my hands on that was not sugar based....and I would take a Whey shake with every meal....as it adds more protein and prevents me from feeling like a bloated Michelin tire man all day.

Reminds me of the simpsons episode where Homer looks to gain a ton of weight to go on disability. And good old Dr. Nick gives homer the rules to eat. Where he says to run the food on a piece of paper, and if it turns clear he should eat it.

I get it, I guess I was just making sure that the message of being 100% paleo won't allow for mass gains. It just makes it a hell of a lot harder!
