Simple Keys for Weightlifting Success
Mike Gray
April 11 2013
Weightlifting
I have noticed over the years that people really try to make this sport much more difficult than it is. Now, don’t get me wrong, this sport by itself is a pain in the ass; however, people then try and complicate it even more by adding things to it.
So to help you out, I am going to list some questions then give you the best answer that I can come up with to save you possibly years of frustrations.
What kind of bar should I get?
How much room do you have left on your credit card? ......

The Back-Off Week
Mike Gray
February 18 2013
Weightlifting
Also known as the de-load week, the back-off week is by far my least favorite week during a training cycle. Coincidentally, as I write this I am wrapping up one right now. If you would have asked me last week at this time I would have told you I couldn’t wait for the damn thing to start, but that was last week and I felt like hell because I thought my body was used as a human pry-bar for the last 3 weeks.
The back-off week is a funny little animal in that you know you need it, yet it ca......

Weightlifting
Those of you who are reading this are probably now or have been in your life pretty passionate about Olympic lifting. I want you to stop and think about this chapter in your life; for some it will be quick and for others it might very well be a lifetime.
We have all at one time hated and or loved it for myriad reasons. Those days when you feel like absolute crap and getting out of bed is a freaking chore, driving to the gym and you hit every bit of traffic in the city and warming up feels lik......

10 More things New Weightlifters should know
Mike Gray
August 22 2012
Weightlifting
1. More isn’t always better, it’s just more.
2. After a PR, you get 24 hours to enjoy it. Then get your ass back to work. If you are anything like me, sleeping that night will be hard.
3. If you feel great full lifts, if you feel a bit off then do power versions, if you feel really bad do some pulls. What I am saying here is if you feel busted up and can’t quite perform a full lifts then do power movements, if you feel really busted up then do pulls.
4. You should tr......

10 things all new weightlifters should know
Mike Gray
August 6 2012
Weightlifting
1. Learn the correct terms. Snatch, Clean and Jerk. Then learn Power Snatch, Power Clean and Power Jerk. Then keep going until you can name every lift on Greg’s video showcase with out notes.
2. Learn kilos. I am at the point where I convert pounds to kilos in my head. It will make training at real gyms easier and meets as well.
3. Find a coach or a group of like-minded lifters. It will make a huge difference in your training. When I started lifting, my kid was pretty young; six year......

Dos and Don'ts of Meet Day
Mike Gray
July 24 2012
Weightlifting
These are the do’s and don’ts of what to do and not do on meet day that I have either watched or experienced myself over the years.
1. Do make weight. Be prepared for this and buy a good scale or get there early enough to check the one they are using. Be polite and don’t cut in front of people who are actually weighing in. Just ask whoever is manning the room for a “courtesy weigh”.
2. &nbs......

Tighten up the bar, lifter will repeat.

Weightlifting
Just about 6 years ago I entered my first weightlifting meet. I had been Olympic lifting for about 4 months and wanted to get into a meet before I took off for Iraq for the next 7 months. So there was a group traveling from San Diego up to San Francisco for the California State Games at a local High School. It was a great time and I learned plenty about competing in a meet and what the difference between “gym” lifting and “meet” lifting is.

How to keep the PRs Rolling
Mike Gray
October 28 2011
Weightlifting
Remember your first year or two of Olympic Weightlifting when you were literally hitting PR’s every week? Remember how awesome that felt? I remember guys who would train at the same place I did actually start plotting where they would be a year from where they were at the time and say things like “Well if I keep up at this rate I am snatching 80k now but in a year I should be doing 150K”!
There aren’t many things better for a lifter than a new PR. It feels so good and we......

Sewage Shake

Weightlifting
I dig the nutritional aspect of the weightlifting game.
I really try to get the most out of what I eat and I love to come in just under my weight while trying to hold onto the most amount of muscle I can. Watching what I eat has always been pretty important to me and having to make weight gives me even more reason to really think about what I consume. I have read plenty about post-workout nutrition and I understand its importance so I devised a shake that tries to encompass everything I believ......

New Programs!
Mike Gray
September 2 2011
Weightlifting
I have to say I love them. It’s that start of a new program that has limitless possibilities that I really enjoy. The thought of new PR's and the day to day battle that just gets me fired up to get started. I have a system I have used for years when it comes to programs starting way back when with that "ADD 50lbs TO YOUR BENCH ROUTINE" out of an old MM2k Magazine that really just grounded your shoulders to dust and made sure I never wanted to flat bench ever again. 1. Print it ou......
